Inquest into Liposuction Abroad
Since a woman died three days following liposuction in Melbourne, an inquest had been made about the safety and efficacy of her procedure. In January 2007, Lauren James suddenly passed away at 26 years of age. She passed away during the recovery period of liposuction when it is important to follow the instructions of the surgeon to reduce the risk of complications from surgery. In the final analysis, the coroner’s inquest focused on the recovery time for plastic surgery
The recovery time period is important in liposuction. For that matter, smooth recovery is crucial in any plastic surgery procedure. It is a time when patients are required to wear compression garments to reduce the risk of blood clots and swelling as well as enhance healing. It is a time when people are required to rest but are given specific instructions about walking and activity level to reduce the risk of complications. Complications from liposuction are rare, but may occur. Complications from liposuction may be due to the lack of adherence to pre and post operative instructions (such as ceasing or taking certain medications), reaction to anesthesia, and poor healing contributed to high risk skin types- among other reasons.
In 2008, nearly 350,000 people underwent the liposuction procedure. Of those, only a very small fraction experienced a complication during or following the procedure. The risk of complications is reduced by following pre-operative and post operative instructions. When people interested in liposuction see a plastic surgeon to consult about liposuction, the plastic surgeon reviews the complete list of possible complications and the rate of occurrence for each complication. It is clear that the risk of complication from liposuction is very low. So, it is no wonder why so many people continue to consult with plastic surgeons about liposuction.
